29 Days of Memphis

9/1/2020

This month I will be turning 30 and saying goodbye to my twenties so, to commemorate 29 here is a blog dedicated to the last year of a decade that brought me many things. 29 Days of Memphis is filled with things that scream Memphis, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis the most beautiful land in the world. Also, each day of September I will TRY to post an activity from the list but remember this is my birthday month so don't be too hard on me if I miss a day!  Be sure to follow me on Instagram as I explore and show you the real Memphis in 29 ways! Unfortunately some the activities listed we can't currently partake in but when we are Covid-19 free be sure to revisit this blog and have some good ole Memphis fun!
  1. Celebrate 901 Day
901 day is usually this huge outdoor celebration but with the way Covid-19 is set up we have to get creative this time around. New Memphis is having a virtual event and you can register here! Virtual Exposure. There will also be a variety of local restaurants offering discounts on today so be sure to check the link for the list! Plug901

  2. Indulge in Memphis Culture and History
    Blues Hall of Fame
    Civil Right Museum
    C.H. Nash Museum Chucalissa
    Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum
    Memphis Music Hall of Fame
    Mississippi River Museum
    SlaveHavenUndergroundRailroad Museum
Stax Museum of American Soul Music
    Sun Studio
    Wither's Collection Museum
    W.C Handy House

  3. Visit Jerry's Sno Cone
I've actually never been to Jerry's Sno Cone but it's a Memphis staple. The people love it and it makes them happy! I'm going to visit this week so stay tuned to check out what i think.

  4. Spend a day Downtown
Just exploring Downtown Memphis helps you connect to the soul of the city! I suggest taking a ride or walk down Riverside or Main Street.

  5. Visit Big River Crossing
Take a bike or a walk and view the entire city from our beautiful pedestrian bridge. It is not only an amazing view but it is super relaxing and a great source of exercise.

  6. Attend a Memphis Festival (when we are covid free) Memphis always has so many festivals to attend and every year the list grows so, next year be ready! I'll be sure to update the festival guide as soon as it's safe for them to happen again.

  7. Go to the Fair (when we are covid free) Growing up this used to be a big deal. They would let us out of school for the first day of the fair and we would actually shop for new outfits. There was good food, creepy rides, and sometimes good concerts. We now have 3 different annual fairs and although I haven't been to the fair in about 7 years I still think it's a good thing to experience especially if you aren't familiar with it.

  8. Take a Trolley Ride
Whether it's for trolley night or just to ride around as you explore, riding the trolley's is definitely a way to experience some Memphis. They have been around since 1993.

  9. Visit The Pyramid AKA Bass Bro Shop
The Pyramid used to host basketball games, televised boxing matches, camps, graduations, and more! Although it is different now it is still an awesome place to visit. Bass Pro taking over the Pyramid has given us restaurants, rooftop bars, amazing views, a themed hotel, and more. I will take that over abandoned any day.

  10. Shop with a Local
The Farmers Market is a great way to shop with locals. Three of my favorite markets are South Memphis Farmers Marker, Cooper Young Farmers Market, and Memphis Farmers Market. Also, you can check out my Instagram page and  click the link below to access an old blog that has a list of some local businesses you can shop with. Plug901

  11. Eat at Rendezvous
I know that eating local is one of the ways to experience Memphis but Rendezvous deserves a spot all to itself. Memphis is BBQ and Rendezvous is one of the most asked about restaurants we have. It is also my choice when you ask me about authentic Memphis BBQ because of how my mom cooks her ribs! I love dry rub and flavor which in my opinion is authentic Memphis BBQ.

  12. Attend the Southern Heritage Classic (when we are covid free) This annual event brings two rival Historical Black College Football teams together every year for the same outcome! For JSU to beat TSU and for old friends to spend some much needed time together. It's basically one big black family reunion and Memphis has been honored to host it every year. Everyone should go at least once.

  13. Eat Local
Take a trip to one of the many well known Memphis restaurants and get a taste of the culinary treats we have waiting for you. Here is a link to an archived blog about some downtown restaurants Plug901. You can also find new restaurants on my social media pages but I will list a few here as well. Rizzo's, Mosa Asian Bistro, Maciel's, Sekisui Pacific Rim, Bluff City Crab, and Global Cafe

  14. Take a City Tasting Tour/City Tasting Box City Tasting tours are a must experience. They are carefully curated food tours that please both your palate and mind! Unfortunately, they are on pause right now due to covid-19 BUT there is a new option to give you both food and culture. City Tasting Box was recently launched helping to feel the void of our beloved food tours. Click the link below to see how you can purchase a box full of local foods and other Memphis Treats. City Tasting Box

  15. Visit Beale Street
The infamous Beale Street! I personally prefer Beale when it's quiet and calm so now would probably be the perfect time to visit. Otherwise, I would recommend going on a Friday or      Saturday evening/afternoon. There is always some form of live entertainment, shops, good food, and good people.
16. Go on a Mural Hunt
If you have an appreciation for creativity and the arts then this will be a good adventure for you. There are so many beautiful murals around the city and the link below has them all! Take pictures, explore, and find yourself in some of Memphis' historic neighborhoods.
Downtown Memphis Mural Guide

17. Attend a sporting event (when covid free)
Memphis definitely doesn't play about sports! We are Tiger Country and Grizz Nation! And we can never forget about our redbirds! So, grab some tickets and join Memphians as we cheer on some of our favorite athletes.

18. Hang with a Local/Eat at a Locals Home
If you were blessed with a friend from Memphis have them be your guide and take you around and if said guide has a family that can cook (which is often here) than pray that they invite you to dinner. This way you get to absorb all of the love, culture, food, and southern hospitality first hand. I promise you'll have a good time!

19. Volunteer or Donate to St. Jude
St. Jude is Memphis, no other way to describe it. They exhibit what it truly means to be a Memphian, helping others and making a difference! One of my favorite things to do is to volunteer so on the link below find some Memphis based Nonprofits that will help you understand how important giving is to Memphians near and far. Plug901.

20. Take a Tour of Possibilities
This tour will take you you around Memphis to explain tragedies we have faced, victories we have won, and show just how far we have come! Book here!

21. Visit Shelby Farms
Most of time I have heard Shelby Farms mentioned it is in comparison to Central Park and it's the corniest marketing line ever from the random tourism video. But Shelby Farms is one of the largest urban parks in the county! There are bike trails, restaurants, event spaces, and dope seasonal events. It's a beautiful space with so many options! Check out the website to see what is the latest with Shelby Farms and what events are taking place! Check the plan tab if you are looking for events. Shelby Farms

22. Fall Movie Night in Chime Square (when covid free) This is one of my favorite annual events! Every year Overton Square sets up the courtyard for movies under the stars. It's free, kid friendly and there are plenty restaurants available if you want to grab a bite. Sometimes there are vendors on site for different theater like treats! Of course Fall movie night won't be happening this year but in the future be on the look out for this one.

23. Get some seasoned wings
Seasoned wings are an amazing creation from the Gods of Memphis and everyone who visits should try some! Seasoned or honey gold, honey hot, suicide, or any of the other flavors we have come up with. My top 3 wing spots for you to try are Crumpy's, Mikes Hot Wings, and Wing Factory. And Oh don't forget to add seasoned fries! Seasoned fries are regular fries with a blend of different delicious seasonings!!  NOT the brown joints!

24. Tasting Tour at Old Dominick Distillery
Our beloved Old Dominick Distillery where they make local spirits, host tasting tours, hold events, and help to keep downtown popping. Old Dominick's history in Memphis goes back 150 years and we are honored to have them here in the city where their journey started. Distilled right here in Memphis you can find all Old Dominick spirits in our local liquor stores. Let me know if you all want a list of the local breweries too because we have quite a few of those.

25. Play Me Some Pimpin, Mane
Memphis and music are always mentioned together! From Rock n Roll, Rhythm and Blues, Hip-Hop (traditional and alternative), and Trap music, we have it all. We also have some of the most talented people you will ever meet! So on a random day this month make a playlist picking from artist like Isaac Hayes, Three 6 Mafia, The Bar Kays, Don Lifted, Booker T and The M.G.'s, Yo Gotti, Emi Secrest, W.C. Handy, Franceschi, 8 Ball & MJG, Project Pat,  Playa Fly, or whatever other genre you are looking for.

26. The Orpheum Theatre
This beautiful building was originally known as the Grand Opera House in 1890. Since then the Orpheum has survived name changes, fires, the great depression and almost being demolished! Saved by a group of concerned citizens the Orpheum has been allowing us to experience the arts ever since! That's why I think it's so important to see shows and concerts there! This place embodies that resilient Memphis spirit. The one that never dies or gives up and continues to reinvent itself! Just like now, the Orpheum is currently offering miniature golfs games on stage with Broadway themed holes! Not even Covid-19 could stop them from reconnecting with the community. Click here for more information or to get your tickets!

27. Research Orange Mound
Because of the history of this neighborhood and it being where I'm from I had to find a way to add it to the list. Click the link to hear about the first African American Community in the history of America that was built by and for African Americans on former plantation grounds. PBS When you are done listening check out our local Nonprofit that has dedicated its time and resources to rebuilding Orange Mound into what it used to be. JUICE Orange Mound

28. Visit Graceland
If Elvis or Graceland is mentioned Memphis follows. Most Memphians have never been to Graceland but people love to go. It's definitely a tourist attraction. The most I know about it is that it is in my second favorite neighborhood, Whitehaven. If interested in purchasing tickets click here!

29. Follow Plug901
I love being able to share my experiences with you all and show Memphis in a different light. I truly believe in my city and what it is capable of! Memphis is evolving and changing so be sure to come here to keep up with all that is happening and allow me to guide you through the real Memphis! Showing all things Memphis and all things positive! 30. Plan a Stay-cation at a Popular Memphis Hotel
I decided to throw an extra in here since I'll be 30 this week! To start off this new decade I'll be blogging about a stay-cation I take at the end of September. Stay tuned to see what Memphis hotel I pick to spend the weekend at and what adventures I get into!
One Year to Grow on
 Quench Your Thirst

There was absolutely no way I could finish this blog without mentioning something that has been the topic of many conversations and Memes, Memphis Water! I learned at an early age that all tap water was not equal! We would go out of town and have bottled water only but at home it could come straight out of the faucet! Later on I learned that was because of our sand aquifer. Memphis has some of the cleanest water in the world and some won't let you forget it. There is actually an organization dedicated to protecting our water supply. Click the link to read more about them! Protect Our Aquifer

You spent an entire month there, huh? I have lived in Memphis my entire life, and it is amazing. Sure, I may not be there right now due to my work, but I still treat it as my hometown. I know that it may not be as great as other places, but it is still a nice place to be in. I enjoyed living there, and I will definitely come back when I can. I hope that you enjoyed your stay there
