Treeform Memphis
“Treeform Memphis” art installation will soon be in a vacant Memphis lot near you. Making its U.S. debut in Memphis, the art installation is Designed by Parisian architectural firm Atelier YokYok. Installed at A.W. Willis Avenue Medical district, the art will mimic a forest and tree canopy, according to the Memphis Business Journal. This installation will also include original work by a local artist Cat Pena. There is a Facebook page dedicated to the installation (@TreedomMemphis) and there will be a discussion on the installation at Crosstown Concourse on June 3, 2018, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. More information and pictures may be found on the firm’s webpage. The plan includes building open-air dining pavilions out of deconstructed shipping containers and elevated tree houses similar to a bird’s nest, turning Beale Street Landing into a community hub, turning Mud Island into an eco-hub, adding a skate park, playground, and rock climbing wall. President and CEO of the River Park Partnership, Carol Coletta, was quoted stating that work should begin the first week of June and be completed after Labor Day. The hope is for the park to host the 2018 RiverArtsFest. Central Station The old central train station will soon have 124 hotel rooms, a 3,500 square foot restaurant, a 6,700 square foot ballroom and an 8,000 square foot retail space along with the Amtrak Station. Under construction, next door is the seven-screen Malco movie theater which will have balcony seating, electric recliners, a restaurant and bar, and an eight outdoor screen and lounge rooftop. The theater is set to open near Thanksgiving. University District Sooooo The University of Memphis (really the University District) has decided to just fill the area with restaurants, apartments, and bars long after I graduated. New to Highland Strip is The Bluff, Insomnia Cookie, Petra Café, Burgerim, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, and Maciel’s Taco Shop. I’m salty but happy for the current and future Tigers. Now, the FedEx Institute of Technology is working on creating self-driving shuttles buses and small robotic deliveries. As stated by Memphis Business Journal reporter, Michelle Corbet, “The DRONES Innovation Research Cluster is looking for a proposal that will introduce these autonomous systems to explore the social, psychological and practical challenges of those interacting within the City.” There was also a mention of expanding the route of the school’s campus shuttle, The Blue Line. Whitehaven Entertainment Center According to the Memphis Business Journal, there is a plan being submitted to bring a 74,000 square foot retail and entertainment center with a trampoline park to the Whitehaven community. The trampoline park would be located next to the Kroger on Shelby Drive and Elvis Presley. The renovated center is expected to create roughly 109 jobs. The wages for the jobs will average $9.70 per hour but hopefully, they will end up being a little more. Raiford's Hollywood Disco We may have a new patio to add to the city’s list. Raiford’s Hollywood Disco on 115 Vance Ave will soon be home to a new restaurant and bar. Owners of the WKDN Hang Suite Bar and Lounge in Nashville are expanding outside of Nashville for the first time. No projected date for an opening but the owners hope to take over the space by late summer or early fall. Collierville Subdivision Collierville will soon have a new subdivision aimed towards retirees. Named “Quinn Ridge”, the subdivision will be located to the south of Collierville. Quinn Ridge will be developed as a 543 residential lot, built in 14 phases over 10 years. The homes will be no smaller than 2,500 square feet with the average price being 500,000 as told by The Memphis Business Journal. The proposal won’t be considered until June 14, 2018. St. Jude We all know how amazing St. Jude is but it seems that they have decided to take things a little further. In addition to their 2015 expansion plan and $412 million research center that is set to open in 2021, St. Jude just announced a $100 million-plus initiative to expand access of care to children in low and middle incomes countries. (See full article written by the Commercial Appeal) This initiative will help St. Jude help children in places like Nicaragua, Jordan, and Philippines. https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/news/2018/05/24/st-jude-childrens-research-hospital-memphis-goes-international/636772002/ Carolina Ave. 27 W. Carolina Ave could soon be an apartment complex with 57 units and 8,000 square feet of the ground floor being retail space. This complex would be just south of Loflin Yard. According to the Memphis Business Journal, the project’s desired completion date would be the middle of 2019. Regional One Regional One (often referred to as the Med) is seeking a 5-6-year $300 million redevelopment plan for the facility. The plan would include demolishing and rebuilding some of the 6 buildings on the hospital’s main campus as published by the Commercial Appeal. With most of the buildings being 45 to 50 years old the trauma center is well overdue for redevelopments. I personally hope they get the funds that they need! The Med has been saving lives since before I could remember, one special life being my oldest sister who was in a car accident in the mid-90s that could have been fatal. This place will always have my respect, support, and love.

Hey y'all! So, there is so much going in Memphis that I had to break it up into two separate blogs. We have redevelopments, new restaurants, and initiatives contributing to the growth and potential of Memphis. I encourage you all to stay informed and get involved so that we can continue to show the world the real Memphis.
Readbox Now when you go rent a movie you may now be able to grab a book as well! Memphis Public Libraries has gifted the city with “ReadBox”, a brilliant play on the popular movie and game rental the Redbox. The Readbox has already been spotted at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, Crosstown Concourse, and in front of the Walgreens on Getwell. Follow them on Facebook @Memphispubliclibraries and I have provided the link to the web page. www.memphislibraries.org/ Piccadilly Okay, don’t judge me but I LOVE Piccadilly! (If you know me you know that though) I used to eat it so much while in college. I still have moments where I buy it a couple of times in one week so when I heard a new one was opening I had to let the people know. The new location will be in Cordova on Germantown Pkwy and will be only for to-go orders. This will be the companies first-to-go location. The new location is set to open in June of this year. Memphis Airport The airport has a new Italian-Themed restaurant called Torn Basil. Torn Basil is located near gate A27 offering pizza, meatballs, salads, sandwiches, and a breakfast menu. South Main Grocery Store Although there is a huge Kroger on Union Avenue near S. Mclean Blvd residents who live further Downtown feel that they are at a disadvantage when it comes to grocery shopping. For years they have desired a grocery store that they could possibly walk to or is a short drive away. It took some time, but this May it was announced that a 25, 0000 square foot grocery is being developed for South Main Street. 136 Webster Ave. will hopefully be a full-service grocery store by the end of 2018. The owner of the location is looking for a tenant but will start small and open the grocery store on his own if no companies are interested. Crosstown Concourse If you have ever been to Crosstown Concourse, then you know that there are a million things in that building. If you live there you basically wouldn’t have to leave your apartment for much except new scenery and soon there will be even more. A new plant-based café will be opening soon located on the second floor and 425- seat black box theater will be opening this fall. “The café will provide free meals to the arts organization’s residents, cater the organization’s events, and be open to the public for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A bar will be open nightly for residents and the public” as written by Memphis Business Journal Reporter, Jacob Steimer. You can follow Crosstown Concourse on Instagram (@crosstownconcourse) to see the progress of the theater. Soulsville A Soulsville retail building will soon be redeveloped and include a restaurant. Memphian Derrick Craig has hopes of opening “Johnnie Mae’s Soul Cafe” in honor of his mother as well as opening other options that would attract the attention of the students of Lemoyne- Owen College. Johnnie Mae’s menu will include soul food, healthy options, and a bar. This project would bring much-needed life to the area and maybe even help draw attention to Memphis’ Historically Black College. 100 N. Main The tallest building in Memphis (34 stories) will hopefully become home to a 550 room Hotel with 220 apartments according to the Memphis Business Journal. With the city’s blessing a New York-based townhouse management company will be turning 100 N. Main into a large convention center hotel. If approved and finalized the project will also include the redevelopment of the 103,000-square-foot building at 147 Jefferson Ave. Pro Football Memphis is set to get a pro football team. Earlier this month I read in the Commercial Appeal that Memphis would be apart of The Alliance of American Football League in 2019. A press conference was held and named Mike Singletary as the head coach. It appears that Memphis previously had franchises in the World Football League, Arena Football, USFL, Canadian Football League and the XFL. I also had no idea that we temporarily housed the Tennessee Titans back in 1997. Who knew! Poplar Commons If you frequent down Poplar Ave near Poplar Commons Shopping Center (Poplar and Perkins Extd) you have noticed that the area has been under heavy redevelopment. Recently, May 23, 2018, a restaurant called Chicken Salad Chick opened making it the newest restaurant to the area. Chicken Salad Chick, referred to on their website as “The Best Chicken Salad in the South”, has a variety of chicken salad, soups, sides, and more. I even read that soon a Smoothie King and a HopDoddy Burger will join the area. Apparently, a building permit was filed in May of 2017 for the Hopdoddy Burger Bar but I guess I was so hype about the Overton Square location that I missed that information. No set date for the opening of Smoothie King or Hopdoddy but I imagine they will both be open before or by the end of this year. Riverfront and Mud Island When I moved back to Memphis in 2016 there was a proposal to add the Riverfront and Mud Island River Park to the TDZ (Tourism Development Zone) redevelopment plan. The TDZ already included projects for the Pinch District, Bass Pro Shop at the Pyramid, and the renovation of the Cook Convention Center. On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, it was confirmed on the City’s website that the addition was approved by the State. The approval means that the Brooks Museum will more than likely be moving Downtown with Front and Union possibly being its new home, $125 million aquarium for Mud Island, and a pedestrian bridge connecting riverfront to the rest of downtown. The next move for the city will be to conduct feasibility studies for the new projects according to the Memphis Business Journal. Check out the City's website for more information and sign up for e-mil updates. https://memphistn.gov/cms/one.aspx?portalId=11150816&pageId=13035469 Carpenter Art Garden Bike Shop brings the residents of Binghampton a biking program that offers more than just two wheels. Founded a little over 2 years ago, The Carpenter Art Garden received a grant from the Plough Foundation to purchase and renovate a Binghampton home. That home is now Carpenter Art Garden Bike Shop. Located at 296 Carpenter Street, Carpenter Art Garden Bike shop is teaming up with Pedaltown Bicycle Company to kick their program into full gear by adopting a bicycle trade-in feature.
“It was started because of demand. Following the story of Donte and his new bicycle, which was purchased from selling the Grizz Hearts you see throughout Memphis, we started to get feedback from the neighborhood. Bikes are simple. They are a teaching tool, they are tools that involve learning together, and it’s a tool that once completed can transport you. The bicycle serves as a symbol NOT to get residents out (or ride away) of Binghampton, but a symbol to bring them together and showcase the talent in Binghampton,” explains Clark Butcher, owner of Pedaltown Bicycle Company and board member of Carpenter Art Garden. This program matches volunteers with an estimated 70 neighborhood children and adults to provide vocational job training and opportunities. Every Tuesday members of the program work on art installations, take-home projects, and gardening with participants potentially earning a bike of their own through the program. The program has received over 100 adult and children bicycles as donations from Pedaltown to aid them in their efforts, but your help is still needed. To generate more donations , Pedaltown is allowing customers to trade-in bicycles they’ve outgrown or no longer use. By donating a bike, you become eligible for a 10% discount on a new bicycle in the store, and it is donated to The Carpenter Art Garden Bike Shop. This program gives you an opportunity to give back to your local Memphis community while you shop, as well as the opportunity to supply those in the program with learning tools or gifting them with a new bicycle. Carpenter Art Garden Bike Shop hopes that this program is used to teach a skill set, create better citizens, and continue to show the world the amazing talent Memphis has. Be sure to check out Carpenter Art Garden (https://www.carpenterartgarden.com/) and Pedaltown Bicycle Company (https://www.pedaltownbicycle.com/) by clicking the links provided and following them on Instagram. So, I'm not sure if you all are aware of the recent statement made by Purple Haze (Downtown Nightclub) about their latest issues. The statement basically stated that Black on Black crime, hard rap music, and them trying to appeal to a more urban crowd was the reason for their troubles. After reading their post I decided to make Purple Haze aware of some of the events that I attended the weekend they decided to make the public aware of their problem. During the weekend of April 6, 2018, I attended several events that played “Hard Rap Music” for an “Urban” crowd and I was fortunate enough to return home unharmed. No violence occurred instead, every event was filled with educated, well behaved black people who were able to coexist without any issues. We apologized when we bumped into each other, sang songs in unison, and even joined in on recorded videos with each other regardless of knowing one another. Now, how is it that we were able to be in the same vicinity without any issues?? Well, it’s simple us black people actually do know how to act and were raised properly by our parents. We truly do live for moments and places where we can have fun and not intentionally bring harm to others, that has never been what we live to do. So, Purple Haze, my question to you is how is it that these events have been able to be successful but you all are having issues? Maybe it is an internal issue?? Then again I’ve never owned a club so what do I know?? However, I can tell you how these events went and hope that you can take away some helpful information or contact these business owners for advice. Let's get into my weekend recap. On Friday I had the pleasure of being a guest of Memphis’ Silent Party “Trap Edition” presented by The SQ. The silent parties are where attendants wear headphones and listen to different stations provided by the DJs of the evening. They have food, drinks, and are usually in a unique location. The Silent parties give you all the amenities of a club while letting you experience something different. On Sunday I made an appearance at a 90s Karaoke Brunch presented by D. Arthur’s Catering from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and afterward I dropped in at Top Off Sundays presented to you by The Social Preneurs. Karaoke had food and unlimited Mimosa while Top Off served as a Brunch after party with music, food, and beverages. The 90s brunch allowed us to step back in time to one of the best decades in life while Top Off Sunday gave us lounge vibes. They were the perfect match for completing your weekend activities. These events have created an environment that is different from your usual party while keeping things safe and modern. Trap and Paint and Trap Karaoke are events in the same category as the local ones listed above. These business owners have continuously been able to bring the city events made for all cultures. They don’t try to appeal to one particular group or only play certain music to appeal to a certain crowd but they have a variety. Top Off Sundays are day parties, and the Brunches always turn into a party as well. Security is always provided and they are very friendly but thorough at their job. I have yet to see security randomly ask a patron to raise their shirt and state that the person may not enter because his underwear is now showing (Security wasn’t able to see the customer's underwear until making him pull up his shirt. He wasn't sagging) as recently done at Electric Cowboy but all visitors were treated with respect and the same. It seems everyone loves Trap Music and Black Culture until it is inconvenient for them and the quick escape when something goes wrong while enjoying the culture is for Black People to be blamed as an entire race. Not all black people are violent or trouble just like not all white people are mass murders or serial killers. (That is what it looks like to stereotyped) If we take the time to try to understand each other and realize that we are all just human the world would be a much better place. Race makes you no less or any better than anyone else and religion doesn’t make you any more dangerous. People commit crimes and murders not a certain race of people. By stereotyping someone or their music you add to the world's issue of racism, injustice, hatred and more. It is one of the most ignorant things a person could do. I hope that as time continues to pass us by we focus more on loving and helping each other because at the end of the day that is all our lives are about, other people. Purple Haze has since taken their statement down but that doesn’t undo the damage. I honestly would have preferred for them to leave it up and allow people to continue to see how many other business owners/ people think that way. I hope we all really pay attention to where we spend our money and the way we are being treated. Purple Haze, I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors and I hope that you start to see us differently. I was definitely upset when I saw the post but this was written in love and as a way to help bring solutions/dialogue to our issues. You all be sure to follow Chef D. Arthur, The SQ, and Social Preneurs on social media for future events. I have listed their social media handles. Instagram: @chef_darthur, @thesq901, @socialpreneurs901 Facebook: @D. Arthur's Catering, @The SQ901, @Social Preneurs Hey loves, I hope all is well! I know you all are waiting for Spring just like I am but while we're waiting I wanted to share these 5 need to know pieces of information.
BOGARD Former Grizzlies Coach Lionel Hollins and director of Memphis based Shoe Charity SoGiv are bringing a new restaurant to Overton Square but good food won't be the restaurants only main focus. According to the Memphis Business Journal, 2% of net food sales will be donated to the Mid- South Food Bank and 2 % of net drink sales will be donated to clean water charities. BOGARD will serve "Southern Inspired" dishes and will be located in the space once used by Schweinehaus. A 10-year lease was signed but no exact opening date referenced for the restaurant just the mention of opening later this year. BOGARD is giving us a purpose to eat and I can't wait to patronize. Sunday Liquor Sales On last Sunday Senate voted to approve Sunday liquor and wine sales. The Bill now has to hit the desk of Governor Bill Haslam to be signed into law. Once that is done the start of Sunday sales will be immediately for liquor stores but won't be effective for grocery stores until January 1, 2019. Hopefully, this won't cause a decrease in sales for liquor stores. I personally prefer to travel to the liquor store for my bottles. Shelby County Voting Wednesday kicked off early voting for Shelby County! To check to see if you're registered, how you may become registered, or for more general information please check the link provided. www.shelbyvote.com Also, check out Choose901's guide to the Shelby County Primaries. It is extremely helpful and contains all the information you need to become a successful voter. choose901.com/guide-to-the-shelby-county-primaries/ Be sure to get out and vote! Local elections are important for your City and State which end up being vital for the Presidency. Let's not continue to make the same mistakes! Golf Championship 2019 Memphis will host the World Golf Championship in 2019. This was announced by the PGA Tour during a press conference on yesterday. During the press conference, it was stated that TPC Southwind will serve as the host of the World Golf Championship-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Porch & Parlor In January I informed you that Bar Louie suddenly closed their doors even some of their employees were unaware. There was talk about a restaurant coming to fill the space soon but no name given at the time. However, on yesterday that changed and it was announced that Porch & Parlor would be taking over the highly in-demand spot. The concept of the fine dining restaurant comes from Tom Powers and Russ Graham, openers of Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar (Downtown) and Southern Social (Germantown). No exact opening date for this restaurant either but construction is set to start next month. Y'all!! First of all, this place is BOMB but let me give you a full review before I start lusting! So, on yesterday (Wednesday, March 28, 2018) I had the opportunity to attend a community mixer for Hopdoddy Burger Bar and could even bring one guest! I decided to take one of the toughest critics I know, my mom! The mixer gave those in attendance the chance to preview the menu, atmosphere, and staff of the restaurant. I can't tell you how I got the invitation. I know I am always signing up for different newsletters but shout out to sweet baby Jesus for coming through. The experience was amazing and I am so glad I was able to be a guest. We were immediately greeted by smiling faces that were ready to serve us and with cocktails! We were told we could look around, mingle, and that the food would be out shortly. We took a seat at table twenty-two and then this variety of fries appeared. Buffalo fries, chili cheese fries, truffle fries and more all waiting for us to dig in and that we did. You could taste all of the fresh ingredients in the drinks that were given and they all had the right amount of alcohol. Every single burger I tried was filled with flavor, juices, and uniqueness. I actually don't eat burgers often so when I venture out to get a burger it's always at places that have been recommended. However, these burgers weren't your normal cheese burger. These burgers were like Five Guys on steroids or just your favorite burger joint multiplied. Everything was exceptional! The prices on the menu were reasonable and they even have a burger where they donate a dollar from each sell to Stax Music Academy to inspire and nurture young people through music education!! I would recommend Hopdoddy Burger Bar Midtown to all burger lovers/food lovers and residents just looking for a cool spot to hang out and have great drinks. They have a patio for your spring/summertime adventures and if you're not really looking to eat burgers they have a turkey burger sent from GOD and two vegan burger options for all against using anything animal for their personal consumption. Hopdoddy Burger Bar has thought of it all! Visiting will not only please your taste buds but give you a dope experience. To the city I ask that you take care of this gem and appreciate it for adding to the list of already delicious eateries. I also want to say thank you to Hopdoddy and their staff for being an example of superb customer service, diversity, and originality. Huge shout out to Hopdoddy employees Erin, Dalton, Jimmy, Arielle, and Fish, they made our experience one to remember! Once we left I asked my mother what rating would she give Hopdoddy if the scale ranged from 1 to 10 and she quickly stated a 10. If you know my mom you know this is a HUGE deal because like I said before she can be hard to impress! PLEASE go see them when they open on next Monday, April 2 they are looking forward to seeing you! Be sure to follow my blog page on Instagram @Plug901 for more stories and updates on what's going on here in the city. I have more pictures from last night on my Insta Story!
