We are a month and a half into the new year, and the holidays are over! We are settling back into our regular routine, and I wanted to touch on a subject I think is important, rest and self-care. Often The holiday season comes with a host of different emotions. It can be a time of joy, family, and laughter but also busy, overwhelming, isolating, and depressing. In those unpleasant moments, we need space and time to replenish and take care of ourselves. We need moments alone. Fortunately, there are spaces constantly being developed to assist with moments of solitude and Memphis recently opened one. Not too long ago I was allowed to stay at Our Living House for some much-needed alone time! My social meter had gotten extremely low, and I needed time in a different space! I needed time with something beautiful and quiet. I pulled up ready to unplug from the world. I was aware that the only electronic device available was a Bluetooth record player and I was okay with that. I opened the door and was completely in awe of what I saw. The inside of the house was beautiful! I could tell that it had been decorated to bring tranquility and encourage rest. The placement of the plants brought elements of the outdoors inside, creating calmness and comfort! I was at peace just standing there! I set the mood of my stay by turning on the record player and listening to a little Erykah Badu while I warmed up my food. It was early afternoon when I arrived, I was prepared to have a great dinner and just vibe! I packed my favorite candle, bubble bath soap (the location is equipped with a double-handle waterfall faucet tub), books, and loungewear. I laid around, danced, watched the clouds through the skylight window before sunset and refused to allow anything to bother me! I completely embraced the moment. The next morning, I woke up refreshed and ready to take on the day. I also wished I could stay a little longer. However, that short stay reminded me that space and time to yourself is vital and that you must put back what you take out. My visit helped me add more alone time to my self-care routine. Owned and operated by St. Louis native Keneisha Malone, Our Living House was designed to promote rest amongst POC and to inspire practicing good mental health. It was also created to combat the blight plaguing our predominately black communities. "Black people deserve it. We deserve to have beautiful homes in our neighborhoods, access to spaces where we can unplug, and connection to nature through plants within the city." Too often, we overload our schedules and act as if we cannot afford to be tired or to relax. Either we are forced to sit down due to health issues or we burn out. I am hoping knowing there are places designated to rest encourages more people to do just that. Take inventory of what you need and how you feel, then decide what's the best solution for you. "Our Living House is a rest house where we can unplug, and just be. The inside of the house has minimal electronics so that when you're staying there, you can just sit with yourself - or whoever you might choose to share your rest."
